MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippine military is sending light aircraft to fly over hundreds of Chinese vessels in disputed waters in the South China Sea, the defense minister said, repeating calls for the flotilla's immediate withdrawal.

International attention is growing over what Manila has described as the "presence and threat" of more than 200 Chinese boats, which Manila believes are manned by the Philippines' navy.

Philippine military aircraft have been dispatched daily to monitor the situation, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said in a statement late Saturday.
Lorenzana said the military will strengthen its maritime presence in the South China Sea to enforce "self-determination" and protect Filipino fishermen.
The Chinese Embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It said the Whitsun Reef boats were fishing vessels fleeing rough seas and had no soldiers on board.
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has reinstated Ambassador to China Huang Xilian, whose spokesman said last week that the Philippines won a dispute in 2016 that clarified its rights among rivals with China.

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) announced on Saturday that it has dispatched several FA-50 fighter jets to intercept an unidentified aircraft that entered the country's air defense zone.
PAF spokesperson Lt. Colonel Maynard Mariano, the unidentified aircraft was detected via radar by the Philippine Air Defense Control Center (PADCC). It is said to fly 122 kilometers (222 miles) northwest of Pangasinan Bolinao.
"PADCC has issued a 'scramble' order to two FA-50s stationed at the Air Defense Warning Center and tasked with preventing the unidentified aircraft from disappearing," the spokesman told the Philippine News Agency. He said the FA-50s were flying at the maximum allowed for the unidentified aircraft, which flew at a speed of 265 (490 km/h).

PADCC rang the plane for identification but no response. Four minutes into the phase, the unidentified plane picked up speed and changed course, exiting Philippine airspace.
Despite the angry move, Mariano made it clear that the PAF had no intention of shooting down the unidentified aircraft. He said that this effort was only for recognition.
Mariano explained that this was not the first time he had entered the country's air defense zone. However, foreign airlines "deliberately violated" the country's airspace years ago because they knew no one would challenge them, he said.
Now, the PAF and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) closely monitor Philippine airspace, immediately issuing warnings for unauthorized aircraft.

"Your PAF is always on the lookout for aircraft entering our airspace with or without permission. FA-50s are always on alert even before the September 2 (collision)," the official told the state-run news agency.
